Steps and pads are the two projects homeowners most often put off, usually because they seem too small to bother a contractor about. They are also two of the projects most likely to be done badly, because the parts that determine whether they last are all buried before anyone sees them.

Concrete Steps: What They Cost

Steps that attach to the house need to bear on a footing set below the frost line, or freeze-thaw movement will lift and separate them from the structure. Just as often, the culprit is settlement: the ground beside a foundation is backfill that was disturbed during construction, and it keeps compacting for years. Steps poured onto that backfill without adequate support sink and tilt away from the house. If your steps have a visible gap at the top, that is what happened, and patching the gap does not address it.

Concrete Pads: Thickness Is the Whole Conversation

"Pad" covers a lot of ground — shed and shop floors, HVAC and generator pads, hot tub bases, dumpster and equipment pads, basketball slabs, trailer parking. What they share is that thickness has to be chosen for the load, and most pads that fail were simply poured too thin.

  • Shed, HVAC, generator, hot tub: 4 inches over a compacted stone base
  • Vehicle, trailer, tractor, or equipment: 5–6 inches with rebar or wire mesh
  • Dumpster and commercial loading pads: 6 inches or more, reinforced, engineered for the actual axle load

A hot tub is worth calling out. Filled and occupied, a mid-size tub can exceed 5,000 pounds concentrated in a small footprint, and it needs a level, reinforced pad rated for that — not a patio slab that happens to be nearby.

Base Prep Beats Concrete Strength

Homeowners tend to ask about the concrete mix. The mix is rarely the problem. A compacted aggregate base spreads the load and drains water away from the underside of the slab.
