What a properly built driveway should give you in the Foothills, why so many fail early, and how to tell whether yours needs repair or replacement.
The short answer: a concrete driveway built correctly in North Carolina should last 30 to 40 years, and plenty last longer. The longer answer is that a large share of the driveways we tear out are nowhere near 30 years old — and almost none of them failed because of the concrete itself.
The gap between the first two lines is the whole story. Same material, same climate, three times the lifespan. What separates them is what happened before the truck arrived.
Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. It doesn't fail by being crushed; it fails by being unsupported and bending. When a driveway is poured directly onto Foothills clay with no compacted stone base, the clay swells when wet, shrinks when dry, and heaves when frozen. Voids open under the slab, and the slab breaks over them.
A compacted aggregate base spreads load, drains water away from the underside of the slab, and gives the concrete something stable to sit on. It is the least visible part of the job and the one that determines the lifespan.
Four inches over a good base is the residential standard for passenger vehicles. Five to six inches with rebar or wire mesh is what you want if you'll park an RV, a work truck, a loaded trailer, or if delivery trucks use the drive. Reinforcement doesn't stop concrete from cracking — it holds the pieces in alignment when it does, which keeps a hairline crack from becoming a trip hazard and a failure point.
Concrete will crack. The only question is whether it cracks where you chose or where it chose. Control joints, cut at the right depth and spacing and within the right window after the pour, create planned weak lines so the slab relieves stress there. Driveways with too few joints, joints cut too shallow, or joints cut too late develop random cracking within a couple of seasons.
Water is what kills concrete in North Carolina, and it does it from underneath. A driveway that pitches toward the garage, or that lets runoff pond along one edge, is steadily washing out its own base. Proper cross-slope and, on sloped lots, deliberate drainage design are as important as the slab.
Rock salt and especially the more aggressive de-icers accelerate surface scaling, and they do the most damage to concrete that is under a year old. On a new driveway, use sand for traction through the first winter. After that, avoid ammonium-based de-icers entirely and use calcium chloride sparingly.
Sealing a few hairline cracks is worthwhile maintenance and cheap. Replacing a single damaged section can make sense where the rest of the slab is sound — though new concrete never matches the color of a weathered slab exactly, and it cures and settles differently.
Full replacement is the honest answer when the base has failed. If you have multiple wide cracks with vertical displacement, sections that move, or ponding across the drive, patching is buying a year or two at real expense. Keep vehicles off it for 7 days and heavy vehicles or RVs off for 28. Seal it in the first year and every few years after. Keep water moving away from the edges. Don't park a loaded trailer on the very edge of the slab, which is its weakest point.
Do those things on a driveway that was built with a real base and correct reinforcement, and 30 to 40 years is a conservative expectation.

Inadequate thickness, missing reinforcement, poorly cut control joints, and bad drainage are the other main causes.
Repair makes sense for isolated hairline cracks or a single damaged section on an otherwise sound slab. Replace when you see multiple wide cracks with vertical displacement, sections that rock under a vehicle, or water ponding across the drive, since those indicate the base has failed and patching only delays the same outcome.
