Retaining walls are the most valuable concrete work we do in Lenoir. Caldwell County elevation runs from around 900 feet to nearly 6,000, and Lenoir's lots sit on real grade — properties step up and down hillsides and yards routinely need levelling before they are usable at all.
A wall here is rarely decorative. It is what converts a bank you can only look at into a level lawn, a parking area, or a patio. It is also what stops the grade moving downhill during a wet Caldwell County spring, which on a clay hillside is a slow but reliable process.
Behind every wall we build goes clean drainage stone and a perforated drain line daylighted somewhere sensible. Saturated soil behind a wall exerts hydrostatic pressure that no amount of block weight resists. A wall built without drainage on a Lenoir hillside is a wall on a countdown, however good it looks the week it goes in. Backfilling with the clay that came out of the hole is the other half of that same mistake.
Segmental block suits most residential walls here — it tolerates minor ground movement, handles curves and tiers, and builds fast. Poured concrete makes sense for engineered walls, tight geometry, or where the wall is doing structural work. Above about four feet, and lower where a driveway or structure sits above it, a wall needs engineering and often geogrid back into the hillside. On a long Lenoir slope, tiering is frequently better and cheaper than one tall wall.
Walls are priced per face foot — height multiplied by the length of the visible face — rather than per square foot of ground. Height, wall type, excavation, whether geogrid is needed and equipment access all drive the number. Because drainage and site conditions matter so much, we quote walls on site, and that visit is free.
Nearly always water. Saturated soil behind a wall pushes it out, and the walls that fail were almost all built without drainage stone and a drain line behind them, or were backfilled with the clay that came out of the excavation instead of clean stone.
As a general rule, walls up to about four feet can be built to standard specification, and above that engineering is normally required. A wall of any height with a driveway, pool or structure above it may need engineering regardless. We will tell you plainly which category your project falls into.
On a long Lenoir slope, tiering often looks better and costs less than a single tall engineered wall. The tiers have to be spaced far enough apart that the upper wall is not surcharging the lower one, which is a design question we work through on site.
